Brand mentions are becoming a first-class visibility metric, especially in AI-generated answers. They have not replaced backlinks: links still perform documented jobs in Google Search that an unlinked name-check does not.

The useful question is no longer mentions or backlinks. It is which kind of visibility, in which system, measured how?

The Short Answer: Yes for AI Visibility, No as a Universal Replacement

Brand mentions are becoming as important as backlinks if the outcome is whether a brand appears in an AI-generated answer. Several recent studies found that broad web presence, branded search demand, and organic search visibility correlate with AI mentions more strongly than raw backlink counts do.

That is not the same as saying mentions have become backlinks by another name. In classic Google Search, links remain part of the documented machinery. They help crawlers find pages, tell Google something about relevance through anchor text, and feed link-analysis systems that include PageRank.

AI visibility adds a different outcome. A brand can be named, compared, or recommended without its own website being cited. Semrush's operational definition separates a mention, where the brand appears in an answer, from a citation, where the answer links to the brand's site. Those outcomes overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

The evidence supports a split verdict:

  • For page discovery and ranking in Google Search, backlinks retain a distinct, documented role.
  • For brand inclusion in AI answers, broad, repeated mentions across the web are an increasingly important correlate and a necessary metric to track.
  • For causation, neither a correlation chart nor a vendor visibility score proves which action made an AI system mention a brand.

Four Things Marketers Call a “Mention”

Much of the argument comes from collapsing four variables into one word.

  1. An unlinked web mention is plain text that names a brand but contains no crawlable hyperlink.
  2. A branded anchor is a link whose clickable text includes the brand name. It is both a mention and a backlink.
  3. An AI response mention occurs when an AI-generated answer names or recommends a brand, with or without a source link.
  4. An AI citation is a linked source attached to an AI answer. The cited page may belong to the brand, a publisher, a forum, a video platform, or another third party.

Backlink count is different again. One site can produce thousands of links, while referring-domain count asks how many distinct domains link. Domain Rating is Ahrefs' proprietary authority metric. None of these measures can be swapped into a sentence without changing the claim.

The strongest recent results are not that links lost. They are that the number and context of times a brand is discussed may explain AI-answer visibility better than the total number of backlinks in some datasets. That is a narrower and more defensible finding.

Google's own documentation says it uses links to determine page relevance and discover new pages. Its ranking-systems guide says link-analysis systems examine how pages connect and that PageRank remains part of the company's core ranking systems.

That does not mean a bigger backlink number automatically wins. Google does not disclose a universal link weight, and its spam policies explicitly target links created primarily to manipulate rankings. Relevance, editorial choice, crawlability, anchor context, and the quality of the linking page all matter more than treating every link as an identical vote.

Nor does an unlinked name-check inherit those mechanics. In a 2022 exchange recorded by Search Engine Journal, Google's John Mueller said he would not assume that an SEO factor detects where people mention a website's name. He still allowed that such mentions can help users discover the site.

That user effect is important. A mention can create awareness, branded searches, visits, reviews, later coverage, and eventual links. Those are possible downstream effects, not proof that Google processed the original text as a link.

Why AI Visibility Changes the Comparison

Traditional search ranks documents. AI answer systems also assemble responses that name entities, compare products, summarize claims, and sometimes cite supporting pages. The unit of success can therefore shift from “did my page rank?” to “did the system know, select, describe, and source my brand correctly?”

That makes off-site language more visible as a measurement category. If a brand appears consistently across reviews, comparison pages, videos, documentation, forums, and editorial coverage, an AI system has more contexts in which to encounter that entity. A plausible mechanism is not a disclosed ranking formula, however. The research has to be read at the level it actually measures.

One Large Study Found a Wide Gap

Ahrefs selected 75,000 likely brands using its own search and authority thresholds, then analyzed millions of AI Overview responses with Brand Radar. Among the roughly 74% of selected brands that had at least one AI Overview mention, branded web mentions produced the study's strongest reported correlation with AI visibility: 0.664. Branded anchors followed at 0.527. Backlink count was 0.218, referring domains 0.295, and Domain Rating 0.326.

Ahrefs later expanded the work across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews. In that study, branded web mentions remained strongly associated with visibility, ranging from 0.656 to 0.709 across the three surfaces, while YouTube mentions were stronger still at roughly 0.737 overall. That matters because it shifts the practical object from “get any citation” to “be discussed in relevant places and formats.”

Seer Interactive reached a compatible but not identical result. It built 10,000 questions from a much larger People Also Ask pool, sent them to GPT-4o, and joined the resulting brand mentions to search data. Brands ranking on Google's first page showed an approximately 0.65 correlation with LLM mentions, while backlink metrics were weak or neutral. This suggests that discoverable, relevant content and brand presence can travel together even when link volume alone explains little.

The Gap Is Not a Causal Weight

It is tempting to divide 0.664 by 0.218 and announce that mentions matter about three times more than backlinks. That would be a misuse of the study. Correlation coefficients are not budget multipliers, algorithm weights, or predicted lifts.

The sample also favors established web properties. Ahrefs required a Domain Rating above 40 and a highest-volume keyword with at least 800 monthly searches to identify likely brands. It then analyzed only brands with at least one AI Overview mention for the reported relationship. That design is useful for finding patterns among visible brands, but it does not show how a new or low-authority brand can cause its first inclusion.

A 2026 preprint underscores the establishment effect. Across more than 100,000 responses and over 100 brands tracked from March through May, Pratyush Kumar reported first-run appearance rates of 73% for global household names, 44% for established mid-market and regional brands, and 11% for niche and small brands. The paper proposes future causal protocols. It does not claim those interventions have already established what produces the ladder.

Not Every Mention Is Equally Useful

If raw mention volume were the answer, indiscriminate publicity would work. The available evidence does not support that conclusion.

Seer tested whether brand frequency across selected major news sites predicted brand mentions in a training-data-bound ChatGPT setup. The overall correlation was about 0.07, effectively little relationship in that sample. Business Insider alone reached about 0.12, and the group of publisher partners measured 0.09 versus 0.02 for non-partners. The study was narrow and tied to older model data, but it is valuable counterevidence: placement on a famous domain was not enough.

AI systems also differ. In Ahrefs' 15,000-prompt citation study, an average of only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Perplexity was much more aligned with top-ranking URLs. Citations are not brand mentions, and the study's early-July-2025 collection is a snapshot, but the result shows why “AI search” should not be treated as a single retrieval system.

The useful mention therefore has at least four qualities:

  • Relevant context: the brand is discussed in relation to the problem, category, comparison, or claim it wants to own.
  • Independent corroboration: sources beyond the brand's own site describe, test, quote, or evaluate it.
  • Consistent entity language: the name, product, category, and claims do not splinter into contradictory versions.
  • Retrievable evidence: the surrounding page, transcript, review, or dataset is accessible enough to be found, parsed, and evaluated.

That is closer to reputation building than mention manufacturing.

The Practical Strategy Is “Both,” With Different Jobs

The cleanest operating model is to stop making PR and link building compete for the same score.

First, create something that deserves independent reference. Original data, a useful tool, a benchmark, a documented method, a distinctive product proof, or named expert analysis gives publishers a reason to discuss the brand. A generic announcement can generate coverage without creating much retrievable knowledge.

Second, distribute the evidence across the places where category decisions happen. That may include industry publications, credible reviews, comparison pages, relevant communities, podcasts, and video transcripts. The Ahrefs cross-platform study found YouTube mentions particularly associated with AI visibility, but that is a reason to test the format, not a guarantee that producing videos causes mentions.

Third, earn the crawlable link when it serves the reader. A linked brand name can do both jobs. It puts the entity in context and gives search systems a discoverable relationship. Do not turn every mention into an aggressive link-reclamation demand. The editorially natural cases matter most: source attribution, product documentation, study credits, and places where a reader needs to verify or continue.

Fourth, measure outcomes separately. A practical scorecard should track:

  • Relevant new referring domains and the pages they point to.
  • Branded anchors versus generic anchors.
  • Unlinked mentions by source type and topic context.
  • Branded search demand.
  • AI answer mentions by a fixed prompt set, platform, date, position, and sentiment.
  • Citations to the brand's own pages versus third-party pages.
  • Qualified visits, assisted conversions, and direct demand.

That scorecard prevents one channel's proxy from becoming the whole strategy. A backlink can improve discovery without producing brand awareness. A mention can shape awareness without improving a page's ranking. A citation can send verification traffic without naming the brand prominently. The point is to know which job each outcome performed.
